Love Is... (Part 82 - Hospital)

wilFor the next few days, Kenny has been getting sicker by the days… Numerous visits to the doctor have been made but none give the exact diagnosis… It ranges from gastric flu to viral fever to stomach flu to common cold… And the fever just goes up and down like a roller coaster… Darryl could not take it anymore when he reached home one day finding Kenny shivering at the corner of the couch…

He wraps a sweater around Kenny and drove him down to NUH A&E department… Darryl was kind of grateful to Kenny was given immediately attention at the hospital but the wait for him was unbearable… No updates but just wait…

Finally after like 2 hours, a nurse came out to inform Darryl that the doctor is waiting for the blood test result and said that the doctor will speak to him once he had gotten the result… So the wait continues…

After another 1 plus hour, the doctor finally appears from the A&E treatment room and speaks to Darryl.

“Hi, I’m Dr Lionel, the duty doctor. And you are?”

“Darryl…”

“Your relationship to the patient is?”

“He is my partner…”

“OK… The result from the blood test has shown a drastic drop in your friend blood platelets and it is reaching an alarming stage that we need to do a platelets transfusion right away…”

“What do you mean it alarming?! What is wrong?! Will he be in danger?! How can it be so serious? He had been to at least 3 doctor visits and 2 blood tests before but none of them say anything about what you have just told me…”

“Darryl, we are suspecting that your friend is down with dengue fever… But now the most important issue is to do the blood platelets transfusion for him immediately… Don’t worry too much… Alright…”

“You sure he will be ok?”

“I will do a close monitoring and keep you updated... Just don’t worry too much... I’ll keep you updated later… I will get the nurse to take down your contact information and he will be admitted so you may want to do the documentation for him first…”

“OK…”

“I will talk to you later…”

“Thanks”

After speaking Dr Lionel, the wait is even more unbearable… How can such thing happen without any detection? Darryl was pacing up and down the hospital waiting for more updates… The nurse came 30 min later to assist him with the admission… Everything was done and now he can only wait…

Darryl was so stressed up and worried… It been more than like 4 hours already and he not seen Kenny beside the on and off checking in with the nurse on how he is doing… Finally he can’t take it anymore… He went up to the nurse and asks to speak to Dr Lionel.

Darryl waited for another 15min before seeing Dr Lionel…

“Sorry to disturb you but I really need to have an update of his status... It like a waiting game that is drag on forever for me…”

“No worry, I understand how you feel. We are still doing the blood platelets transfusion for him… Well maybe let me give a brief explanation on why the transfusion is required maybe that will put you at ease…”

So he spends almost 15 minutes to explain to Darryl on how dengue fever can be deadly and why the platelet transfusion is crucial for Kenny. After listening to him, Darryl feel a bit more relaxed as he feel that Dr Lionel is really doing his best to take care of Kenny… He even suggested Darryl to get a friend or family member to come and accompany him if he decided to stay around here till everything settle down…

“Can I go in and visit him?”

“Of course you can… Just a short while… Come let me bring you to him…”

“Thank you so much…”

When inside the treatment room, Darryl heart just ache when he saw Kenny linking up with all the medical equipment and the packet of platelets hanging above him. Looking at him, it brought tears to Darryl’s eyes… For the first time, he finally understands how Kenny is feeling when he is lying in the hospital due to his own naïve act… His heart just sank deeper as he approached closer to Kenny…

Kenny: “Dear…” He called out softly... Darryl walked up to him trying to control his tears...
Darryl: “I’m here… Are you doing ok?”
Kenny: “Yup… Doctor said I maybe down with dengue fever…”
Darryl: “I know… Just have a rest ok… I know it been tough on you for the past few days… Sorry…”
Kenny: “Why sorry?”
Darryl: “I didn’t take good care of you and should have brought you to the hospital earlier… At least it will not be that serious…”
Kenny: “Dear, don’t blame yourself… Even if you send me in earlier, I may get the same response as the clinic… Don’t worry… I will be fine, OK?”
Darryl: “Hmmm…”
Kenny: “Don’t forget we still have a honeymoon to go to…”
Darryl: “Never forget…”
Kenny: “Have you informed my parents about this?”
Darryl: “I had forgotten all about it… I made the call now…”
Kenny: “No… Call them only when I’m in the ward… At least they no need to here whole night…”
Darryl: “You sure?”
Kenny: “Yes… In fact, you should go home and rest as well… You still need to work tomorrow…”
Darryl: “No, I want to be here for you…Please?”
Kenny: “But you can’t do much here too right…”
Darryl: “I just want to be here for you in case you need anything I will be here…”
Kenny: “Dear, I just don’t want you to exhaust yourself…”
Darryl: “Don’t worry about me… Just make sure you get well and listen to the doctor… I know it going to be painful but you have to endure it, ok?”
Kenny: “I will…”
Darryl: “I better go out first… If you need anything, get the nurse to call for me... I will be here…”
Kenny: “Ok… I love you…”
Darryl: “I love you too… I’ll see you in a while…”

Darryl head out to the waiting area and waited for the nurse to inform him of the admission… After not long, Dr Lionel came out of the treatment room and inform Darryl that Kenny has finish his platelets transfusion and they will be transferring him to the ward soon…

Things seem to be on a quicker pace now that the transfusion is done… Kenny was transferred to the ward in less than 30min… Darryl walked up to the ward shortly after being informed by the nurse… He sat next to Kenny and hold on to his hand while Kenny slowly drifted into sleep… Darryl look at the watch and it is already past 2am...

What a night...
